Portugal’s Barroso Agro-sylvo-pastoral System awarded GIAHS site

The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems awarded Barroso Agro-sylvo-pastoral System as a new GIAHS site. It is Portugal’s 1st certificate with the being classified as a GIAHS site. The process was developed by ADRAT (Development Association of Alto Tâmega Region) with the support of the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture, both Municipalities inserted in the Barroso Region, universities and other agricultural local associations.
The GIAHS certification process is promoted by FAO and intends to certify, around the world, traditional agriculture systems, for its outstanding landscapes of aesthetic beauty that combine agricultural biodiversity, resilient ecosystems and a valuable cultural heritage.
